ABV = Alcohol By Volume
Bigger ABV means more alcohol. Regular mass produced lagers are 4-5%. Keep in mind, that difference in ABV can be quite profound.
Meaning difference between 4% beer and 8% beer is huge.
There are two important factors that make beer bitter:

 Boiling time
Usually beer with lower ABV is called session beer.
