What is ABV and IBU?

[ПЕРЕВЕСТИ НА РУССКИЙ]

…to make sure you understand what numbers on the beer bottle mean you might want to know at least two of these numbers: ABV and IBU. You can’t really tell if you will like the beer or not, however at least you can approximately guess what type of beer it is.

What is ABV and IBU?

IBU = International Bitterness Units

IBU is a bitterness scale: 0 — 100.

Different people experience bitterness differently, yet it’s still an easy scale to understand: bigger number means more bitterness.

ABV = Alcohol By Volume

Bigger ABV means more alcohol. Regular mass produced lagers are 4-5%. Keep in mind, that difference in ABV can be quite profound.

Meaning difference between 4% beer and 8% beer is huge.

What is ABV and IBU?

IBU: Bitterness

There are two important factors that make beer bitter:
[1] Types of hops
[2] Boiling time

ABV: alcohol

Usually beer with lower ABV is called session beer.
Additionally, beer with higher ABV is called imperial beer.
